Suttum Vizhi Sudar

Among myriad of his excellency's compositions, Only very few are remembered by us. Thanks to the tamil cinema. From 'kappal ottiya thamizhan' to 'kandukondean kandukondean', bharathi's songs were featured and also took a good recognition. One among them from the movie KK was this 'Suttum vizhi chudar', music composed by ARR and sung by Hariharan. Its always been one of my all time favorites, the pleasant music and that appealing voice, excellent. So here it goes,

Suttum vizhi sudar than Kannamma
Suriye chandiraro?
Vattakkariye vizhi - Kannamma!
Vanakkarumai kollo?

Pattu karuneela - pudavai
Padhittha nalviram
Natta nadunisiyil - Therium Natchathirangalladi!

Solai malaroliyo -Unathu Sundarapunnagai than?
Neela kadalalaiye - Unathu Nenjin alaigaladi !
Kolak kuyil oosai - Unathu Kuralin inimaiyadi!
Valai kumariyadi - Kannamma
Maruvak kadhal kondain.

Sathiram pesugirai - Kannamma

Sathiram yedhukkadi?
Athiram kondavarke - Kannamma
Sathiram undodi!

Moothavar sammadhiyil - Vadhuvai Muraigal pinbhu saivom
Kathiruppenodi! - Ithupar
Kannatthu muttham ondru!

Transliteration:

Your gaze has the brightness of the sun and moon
Your eyes reflect the darkness of the skies

The diamonds on your dark silk saree,
show me the stars in broad daylight.

Your smile is the bloom of the garden,
Your heart, the waves of the sea,
Your voice , sweet like the koel's
My love longs for union, Kannamma

You talk of Rules, Kannamma
What rules do paramours follow?

Elders , marriage and rituals can wait,
Can I ? Come now,
Let me kiss you.

Regards,
Visu

Nice da. Keep it going. I of course, did not understand the tamil version, but read the English translation. Pretty profound feelings for his love I suppose.

A rare one that correctly translates "aathiram kondavarku" !!! To be more accurate, the slang means " those who have (vested) interest". Most other blogs translate it literally as " those who have anger"..which is a very naive translation and irrelevant in the poem
